Do you pay tax selling on Vinted?
It depends on what you're selling. Clearing out your own wardrobe is treated very differently from buying items to flip for profit.
This is general information, not tax advice. For your own situation, check GOV.UK or speak to an accountant.
1. Selling your own unwanted things
HMRC's guidance is that if you're just selling your own unwanted belongings from time to time, like old clothes and toys, you don't usually need to tell HMRC. The main exception is a single item or collection sold for more than £6,000.
2. Buying things to resell (flipping)
If you buy items with the intention of reselling them for a profit, that's trading, and the rules are different:
- You get a £1,000 trading allowance each tax year across all your side hustles combined.
- That £1,000 is measured on income (your total sales), not profit. A reseller can pass it quickly even on small margins.
- Above £1,000, you need to register for Self Assessment and report it. You can then either use the £1,000 allowance or deduct your real costs (stock, fees, postage), whichever is better for you.
- The deadline to register is 5 October after the end of the tax year you started trading in.
3. The "30 items or £1,700" reporting rule
Since 2024, platforms including Vinted, Depop and others have to share seller information with HMRC once a seller makes 30 or more sales, or earns about £1,700 (€2,000) or more, in a calendar year.
That's a reporting rule, not a new tax. Being reported doesn't mean you owe anything. It means HMRC can see the activity, so if you are trading, it's more important than ever to declare it properly.
Keep simple records from day one
- What you paid for each item, including fees and postage.
- What it sold for, and any selling costs.
- Dates for both.
The Bargin app tracks this for you: every item you buy, relist and sell, with real profit, plus an export you can hand to an accountant.

Questions
Will Vinted report me to HMRC?
Platforms like Vinted and Depop share seller details with HMRC if you sell 30 or more items, or earn about £1,700 (€2,000) or more, in a year. Being reported doesn't by itself mean you owe tax.
Do I pay tax selling my own old clothes?
Usually not. Selling your own unwanted belongings from time to time normally isn't trading, so you don't usually need to tell HMRC.
Do resellers pay tax on Vinted?
Buying things to resell for profit counts as trading. If your trading income is over £1,000 in a tax year, you need to register for Self Assessment and tell HMRC.
